Purim the Torah High Way

This past week, Torah High students celebrated the joy of Adar and Purim by dressing up in different themes every day. And to make these intriguing dress up days even more exciting, the Student Council created a competition between the grades for which grade has the best costumes/overall participation in the dress up days. After each day, the Student Council announced which grade “won” for the day, and chose one student per grade that displayed the best costume in their class. At the end of the five days, the grade that won the whole competition for overall participation and effort was announced. Since this competition and all the fabulous costumes brought such excitement to Torah High, I think a recap of the winning costumes each day is quite deserved.

First came Monochrome Day, where each girl came to school wearing all one color! The winners from this day were Hannah Angeloni (9th grade), who showed up to school in a bright blue skirt and sweatshirt to match, Naomi Moryosef (10th grade), who joined along in the blue trend, wearing a poppy blue skirt and jacket AND an electric blue wig, Hannah Chowaki (11th grade), who contrasted her blue peers by wearing all burgundy, and finally, Ahuvah Leibman (12th grade), who wowed everyone with her bright appearance in monochrome yellow! Stealing the show, Ahuvah was also part of the winning class for Monochrome Day, the seniors.

Following Monochrome Day was Decades Day, where each student dressed up in the attire of their favorite decade. Ella Yerushalmi (9th grade), Gooey Wrovslatsky (10th grade), Kayla Venger (11th grade) and Tzivya Rosenberg (12th grade) were the winners of the day. Ella won for her sparkling poodle skirt and overall accuracy of 50s attire. Ms. Wrovslatsky also pulled off a surprisingly accurate representation of 90s attire in a bohemian, free-style outfit. Kayla, dressed in 90s attire, achieved a stylish and trendy look in a floral, vintage skirt, leather jacket, and of course, Dr. Martens. Taking the win for the senior class was Tzivya Rosenberg, dressed as Rosie the Riveter (the “We Can Do IT” woman”). Her representation of the woman in the famous painting was on par! The freshmen class won for the day for their joint costume as Women From The 50s!

The third day was Celebrity Look Alike Day. The winners for Celebrity Look Alike Day were personally my favorite, and no, it’s not because I won in my grade… or is it? Anyways, I, Rebecca Venger (9th grade), was dressed as Voldemort from Harry Potter, as the rest of my class also dressed up as Harry Potter characters. I wore a bald cap and a long black cloak to match the dark and vicious mood of the infamous villain, Voldemort. Miriam Bowers (10th grade) also stunned everyone in her striking black, sparkly outfit as Kendall Jenner (her class dressed as the famous Kardahsian clan, or Klan). Then came Liora Geunniche (11th grade), who seriously tricked us into thinking she was actually Ariana Grande! Turns out it was just a costume, but her slicked back high ponytail and black knee length boots were quite deceiving! Last came Ahuvah Liebman (12th grade), earning her second win of the competition as Frankie Lero from My Chemical Romance. The sophomore class won for the day as the Kardashian Klan and had us all starstruck, to say the least.

Then came the fourth day, Disney Day. As the dress up days and competition were nearing an end, the competitive spirit only strengthened from here, with plenty of classic and unique costumes filling the halls. Annalee Haim (9th grade), set the tone for a day of childhood throwbacks in her costume as Agnus from Despicable Me. The rest of her class joined along with her as other Despicable Me characters, only to realize Despicable Me is not Disney. Uh oh. Anyways, Naomi Moryosef (10th grade), did actually dress up as a Disney character, a classic one, in fact… Snow White! Several of her classmates joined along as Snow White’s (aka Naomi’s) seven dwarfs. Their work paid off as they were the winning class of the day. As for the junior class, Liora Geunniche stole the show once again as Anna from Frozen! Now is the time I’d usually describe the winner for the senior class, but unfortunately, I do not know nor did I see the supposed winner, Patricia. Congratulations, I guess?

Finally, the last and final dress up day of Adar this year, Red Carpet Day. The gowns and costumes worn by all the Torah High students that day were marvelous, to say the least. Each student dolled up in their most ornate and bedazzled attire, along with impressive makeup and hairdos. The winners, or should I say “Academy winners” for this day were Leah Wilson (9th grade), Miriam Bowers (10th grade), Eve Zanani (11th grade), and Rochelle Fradkin (12th grade). And those weren’t the only winners on Red Carpet Day, as the seniors presented an award ceremony for the whole school! Throughout this month, Torah High students filled out a Superlatives form to nominate their peers in various “Most likely to…” categories. For example, some of the superlatives were “Most likely to show up late to your own wedding”, or “Most dramatic”, etc. The award ceremony, hosted by Zippy Wilson and Rochelle Fradkin, was held in the social hall and it was quite a show! Each winner accepted their win with quirky acceptance speeches as true celebrities. At the end of the show, the freshmen were announced as the winners of the Dress Up Competition for overall participation and effort!

To top off a spectacular week filled with dazzling costumes was the most amazing Purim Yom Iyun celebration planned and organized by Mrs. Ertel, who never fails to entertain us all. The event began with delicious edible delicacies like fresh fruit and vegetables, hamantashen, candy and chocolate, and more! Then, when we thought it couldn’t get better than that, fresh sushi arrived straight from Ralph’s, along with fresh cotton candy and snow-cones! As the students ate, they decorated purim masks and purim-themed tote bags. Then, the talented and renowned speaker, Jackie Bitton, who previously worked at Torah High, delivered a meaningful speech to the girls over Zoom. She discussed G-d’s love for us, even in rough times, and being able to change your perspective in troubling and unprecedented times like these. It was truly inspiring! The day ended off with the award ceremony described above.

In conclusion, Adar at Torah High does not disappoint! From jam packed Yom Iyuns, unique Dress Up days, and delicious food, this month was by far the happiest of them all. The spirit and happiness that filled the halls this past week and throughout the whole month at Torah High was truly unmatched.
