Torah High is proud to announce the formation of its official volleyball team, effective June 2023. The team conducts practices twice weekly, primarily on Sundays and Mondays, with a focus on preparing for a major tournament at YULA where they will compete against numerous Jewish girls' teams from schools such as Shalhevet and Frisch.
Comprised of thirteen members, the team is led by the unofficial team captain Lia Ellis who, along with other team members, played an instrumental role in its establishment. Dr. Michaels was informed of the upcoming YULA tournament by Ellis and reached out to the school to inquire about Torah High's potential participation. Fortunately, the school welcomed the addition, and Torah High was able to secure a spot in the mainstream Jewish tournament after another Jewish school withdrew.
The volleyball tournament is set to begin on March 15th and will span four days, concluding with a Shabbaton. Multiple games will be played from Wednesday through Friday, with the competition taking place at YULA girls' campus in central Los Angeles, which is approximately two hours away from San Diego.
The benefits of having a volleyball team extend far beyond the competition. By working together on the court, the team members are learning valuable teamwork skills that will serve them well in their future endeavors, particularly in the workplace. The girls will also benefit from regular exercise, which is a rarity among many Torah High students due to their heavy workload.
Moreover, the team provides an extracurricular activity within the Torah High academic system, which is particularly significant given the limited number of athletic extracurricular activities. As one 11th-grade student on the team, Hesed Finkleman, aptly stated, "The volleyball team not only provides us with an opportunity to exercise, but it also builds our relationships with one another and teaches us how to work together as a team." The establishment of the volleyball team marks an important milestone in the history of Torah High, as it expands opportunities for its students and paves the way for further growth and development.
