Torah High Fashion Capsule 2023

Updated: Feb 11, 2023

Oftentimes, a school yearbook will feature a “fashion section” that details the fashion trends of the year and highlights the ones that became prominent at school. I did some digging to find out when Torah High had last featured such a section, and I found some disappointing results: it’s been a long while. I find this discovery to be rather frustrating because, as we all know, Torah High is a center of diverse fashion. Even with dress code restrictions, the creative students at Torah High make it their mission to express themselves through their clothing. So, I guess that leaves it up to me to make sure that the students’ expression is given a platform. With that, let's have a look into some of this year’s biggest fashion trends (so far).

1. The Slipper

Though slippers are technically against dress code, many girls have begun wearing slipper-type shoes to school which still fit into dress code (meaning they are closed toed with a back). Some girls have decided to sport more vibrant “slippers,” such as bright pink ones with fuzzy fur. I’m all for it! Plus, the morbid winters of San Diego call for some desperate measures. After all, who even has the ability to tie shoelaces when it’s that cold out?

2. The Pencil Midi

There's been a recent trend in the world of "Jewish schools in America" for girls to wear pencil midi skirts. These are basically just black pencil skirts that are very long! Many girls have begun incorporating this trend into their everyday outfits. Though they are also not officially included in the Torah High dress code, I thought they were a noteworthy addition since many Torah High girls wear them outside of school!

3. The Preppy Look

Some girls have always come to school dressed in prim and proper outfits; however, recently, this look has risen to new heights. Since the media has popularized the vintage look, several new styles have been reborn. One of these styles is the '90s “first job out of college in NYC” look. . . or, at least, that’s what I like to call it. Imagine the leading lady in an opening scene of a '90s romcom: she’s most likely rumbling her way through the busy streets of New York City so that she can get to her marketing job on time, and she’s probably wearing a headband, a white button-down, a mini-skirt or slacks, and some loafers. Nowadays, you can barely tell the difference between that romcom lead and some of the stylish girls at Torah High (in a tznius manner, of course)!

4. Anything but a Backpack

It is not atypical to find a roaming senior at Torah High without a backpack. After all, who even has the strength to carry a backpack when you’re carrying the weight of being a #supersmartsenior on your back at all times? No one! However, this trend, or shall I say “alternative-to-a-chiropractor-visit,” has spread through the rest of the school. Nowadays, it is not atypical to see a junior or sophomore sporting a shoulder-held bag or purse instead of a backpack. I think the freshmen are still sticking to backpacks, though.

5. Wait, We Have School Today?

Ever seen those opening scenes in a cheesy movie when a teenager is rushing to get to school 5 minutes after they’ve woken up? Well, the recent pajama look at Torah High proves that that really does happen in real life (I can attest)! Don’t be surprised when you see at least a handful of Torah High girls beautifully modeling a "tznius-sleep-chic-mixed-with-pleated-skirt" look on any given school day. Some girls have stylized this even more by incorporating the “street-style" look into their comfortable outfits -- this includes long, oversized sweatshirts and vintage sneakers.

6. Claw Clips and Other Hair Accessories

Remember those days when hair was just put up in a ponytail? Well, it seems that at Torah High those days are beginning to leave us. Many girls still go for the typical pony, updo, braid, or leaving their hair down style, but there has been a great revolution in the “hair accessories” trend! Students will often sport claw clips instead of classic ponytail holders, and others will wear beanies (obviously because of the morbid winters) or headbands -- a great new way to express yourself!

Well, it seems as though most of the trends have been covered, and they’re all amazing! At Torah High, we embrace the diversity of fashion, and we can’t wait to keep this capsule updated for years to come!

Oh, wait! There’s one more important trend I forgot: being fashionably late (pun courtesy of Hannah Bowers). Being fashionably late seems to be the “thing” around here. We know it’s not necessarily a trend the administration or teachers accept, and we students probably shouldn’t accept it either, but hey, at least it’s fashionable!
