Beatles and Body Doubles, Big Pharma and Back Doors: To Believe or Not to Believe?

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

Article by Hannah Hydorn ('20)

If you fall into the category of the majority of the human race, you read history books, watch the news, or read articles, believe it, and move on. But have you ever stopped to think that maybe you are just being fed nonsense that some higher authority wants you to believe? Well, even if you don't, there are plenty of people in the world who refuse to believe these mainstream ideas and will try their hardest to uncover the underlying truth to all the lies we are told. Not sure if you are a believer? Here are a few just to get you thinking.

I have some sad news for any of you Beatles fans: some say that they never actually existed. Yes, there was a band, the Beatles, that produced iconic music. However, some theorize that throughout their reign in the music industry, the band used body doubles.

However, some theorize that throughout their reign in the music industry, the band used body doubles.

People claim they can spot the differences between the members throughout the years. But, doesn’t everyone look a little different after time? The founder of this idea believes there were three John Lennons because of changes in the lips, nose, and eye gap. Some believe that the real Paul McCartney died in a crash in 1966 and he was replaced. As for George Harrison, his eye levels and teeth differ in pictures. People believe that the reason for using the body doubles was to keep up with the media and the demand from the public to produce music. It allowed them to be more creative and superhuman-like. Without this stunt of switching members, they would never have been able to have such a successful career.

Another popular conspiracy is that Big Pharma is withholding a cure for cancer from the public. Big Pharma is the term used to refer to the largest publicly traded pharmaceutical companies. This “organization” has been involved in many scandals, one being the recall of a pain killer. There are many conspiracy theories that believe that Big Pharma operates for evil purposes and against public benefit. People speculate that they have found a cure for cancer, but are withholding it to prolong cancer research.

An abundance of money is directed towards cancer research and people think that Big Pharma is withholding the cure to be able to amass more money through research. However, this conspiracy provokes many questions. Would they not make more money by selling the cure? How could thousands of people keep quiet about this secret? There are multiple strains of cancer, could one thing cure all?

These theories leave one wondering. Could the things we so easily categorize as facts be veiling malevolent crimes and corruption? Or is it better that we don’t know? Is ignorance bliss, or is bliss believing? But ask yourself this: Are you a believer?
